Dublin Airport to Galway: Direct Coach or Train Connection

Travelling from Dublin Airport to Galway is possible without entering Dublin city centre. For most visitors, a direct coach is the simplest option; travelling by train can also work well when you want a rail journey or plan to spend time in Dublin first.

Dublin Airport to Galway at a glance

  • Direct coach: the most straightforward public-transport choice, with no city-centre transfer.
  • Train: requires travel from the airport to Dublin Heuston before boarding an intercity service.
  • Car: useful for a wider western Ireland itinerary, but unnecessary for a city-only break.

Direct coaches from Dublin Airport

Direct intercity coaches connect Dublin Airport with Galway. Services normally collect passengers from designated coach zones at the airport and finish at a central Galway stop, often close to Eyre Square and Ceannt Station. Operators, stops and frequencies can change, so compare journeys for your exact travel date using the official TFI Journey Planner and follow the instructions on your ticket.

A direct coach avoids carrying luggage across Dublin and is usually the easiest choice after a flight. Book ahead when travelling on Friday or Sunday evenings, bank holidays, during major Galway festivals or around Christmas. Keep your booking confirmation available offline and check which terminal stop applies.

Taking the train from Dublin

There is no railway station at Dublin Airport. To use the train, first travel to Dublin Heuston station by bus, coach or taxi, then take an Irish Rail intercity service to Galway Ceannt Station. This involves at least one transfer and is rarely the fastest airport-to-Galway route, but it can be comfortable if you have a generous connection or an overnight stay in Dublin.

Check airport transport and the Galway train separately, leaving a substantial buffer between them. Flight delays, baggage reclaim and Dublin traffic are unpredictable. Advance tickets and current departure information are available from Irish Rail.

Hiring a car at Dublin Airport

The main driving route follows the M50, M4 and M6. Confirm the rental company’s toll policy before leaving, as different toll points and payment arrangements may apply. Photograph the car at collection, understand the fuel policy and check whether your accommodation provides parking.

If Galway city is your only destination, a car may spend most of the visit parked. Central attractions are walkable and Salthill is served by local buses and taxis. For a later trip through Connemara, consider collecting a car in Galway instead. Our Dublin to Galway comparison explains the wider trade-offs, while our car-free Galway guide helps with local planning.

How much connection time should you allow?

Do not book a departure too close to the scheduled landing time. Allow for immigration where applicable, baggage reclaim, terminal walking and possible flight delays. A flexible or later ticket can be worth the extra cost. When returning to the airport, build in additional time for road traffic and airline check-in requirements.

Arriving in Galway

Many services arrive near Eyre Square, an easy walk from Shop Street, the Latin Quarter and numerous hotels. Check the stated Galway stop rather than assuming every operator uses the same location. If you are continuing to Salthill or an outer neighbourhood, local bus or taxi is convenient with luggage. See our Ceannt Station arrival guide for orientation.

Useful airport-to-Galway tips

  • Compare the full journey, including transfers and waiting time.
  • Check the terminal and coach-zone details on the day.
  • Keep essential medication and a waterproof in hand luggage.
  • Download tickets before leaving the terminal Wi-Fi.
  • Tell your accommodation if a late arrival affects check-in.
  • Recheck live service updates after landing.
