Renvyle Peninsula: Beaches, Tullycross & Wild Connemara Coast

Renvyle Peninsula Connemara is a quieter stretch of Atlantic coast north-west of Letterfrack, known for white-sand beaches, low coastal roads, island views and a backdrop of the Twelve Bens and Mweelrea.

Renvyle Beach

Renvyle Beach is one of the peninsula’s best-known stops, with white sand, clear Atlantic water and views back towards the Connemara mountains. It works equally well for a short walk, a picnic or a longer beach stop in settled weather.

Islands View

On the north coast, Islands View looks towards Crump and smaller offshore islands. A narrow road leads from the Connemara Loop towards the viewpoint and beach, so drive slowly and use proper parking rather than blocking local access.

Tullycross

Tullycross is one of the small village centres serving the peninsula. It is useful for a break, food and a sense of local life rather than being a large sightseeing destination. The surrounding roads connect the villages, beaches and coastal viewpoints.

Renvyle’s O’Flaherty history

The peninsula also has links with the O’Flaherty family, one of the dominant Gaelic families of west Connacht. The ruins associated with Renvyle Castle add a historical layer to a landscape that is otherwise often visited mainly for beaches and scenery.

Connemara pony country

The Renvyle area has a strong equestrian tradition and is home to the Connemara Pony National Stud. Even if you are not booking a riding experience, the pony remains an important part of the region’s rural identity.

Film landscape

The beaches and cliffs of the peninsula have also appeared on screen. The 1977 film The Purple Taxi, starring Fred Astaire, Charlotte Rampling and Peter Ustinov, used Renvyle locations for its dramatic Atlantic setting.

Combine Renvyle with Letterfrack

Letterfrack, Connemara National Park and Kylemore Abbey are all close enough to form part of the same northern Connemara area, but a beach-heavy Renvyle day is better when you leave space for weather and unplanned coastal stops.

Driving and parking

Roads around the peninsula can be narrow. Passing places are for traffic, not photography, and gateways must remain clear. Summer beach traffic can build quickly on sunny days, so an early start gives a calmer experience.

Experiences to combine with Renvyle

Renvyle pairs naturally with visits to Kylemore Abbey, scenic guided tours of northern Connemara and outdoor experiences around Letterfrack. If you are looking for an organised trip from Galway, check whether the itinerary actually stops on the Renvyle Peninsula rather than simply passing through the surrounding region.

For a relaxed day, choose one major activity and leave time for the coast. Our own partner booking links will be added when ready.

Who will enjoy Renvyle?

Families, couples, photographers, cyclists and visitors who want a less town-centred Connemara day will find the peninsula particularly rewarding.
