Salmon Weir Bridge Galway: Where the Corrib Shows Its Power

Galway’s Salmon Weir Bridge is not simply a way across the Corrib. It is one of the best places to appreciate the speed and force of the river as it races through the city, with Galway Cathedral rising immediately beside it.

Why the location matters

The bridge sits close to the salmon weir and a river crossing used for generations. The surrounding stretch of the Corrib has long been associated with fishing, mills and the movement of people between the city, university and western suburbs.

What to look for

Face downstream for cathedral views and churning water; look upstream towards the weir and university grounds. In the appropriate season, anglers may be visible below. Water levels change rapidly after rain, creating a much more dramatic scene than visitors expect from a short urban river.

The pedestrian crossing

A newer pedestrian and cycle bridge beside the road bridge provides a more comfortable crossing away from traffic. Use designated viewpoints and do not lean over barriers. The Corrib has powerful currents, cold water and dangerous edges.

Build it into a walk

From the city-centre side, cross towards Galway Cathedral, then continue north along University Road to the University of Galway Quadrangle. The stop itself may take only ten minutes, but it fits naturally into a longer Corrib walk towards Woodquay or the city centre.

Practical information

  • Location: On the River Corrib beside Galway Cathedral and the University of Galway.
  • Cost: Free to cross and view.
  • Best for: Fast-flowing river views, a short city walk and dramatic photographs after rain.
  • Take care: The bridge carries traffic and the river below is exceptionally powerful; remain behind barriers and use the pavement.

Location and directions

The bridge crosses the Corrib beside Galway Cathedral, a short walk northwest of Eyre Square.
