The Aran Islands from Galway are one of the easiest ways to turn a city break into a full Atlantic day trip. The three inhabited islands — Inis Mór, Inis Meáin and Inis Oírr — share limestone landscapes, Irish-language culture and ferry access, but they feel very different once you arrive.
Which Aran Island should you choose?
Inis Mór is the largest and has the widest choice of attractions, food, pubs, accommodation and transport. It is the easiest choice for a first visit if you want major sights such as Dún Aonghasa and plenty of options during the day.

Inis Oírr is the smallest and works particularly well for walking, cycling and a compact day trip. The Plassy wreck, O’Brien’s Castle, beach and lighthouse can be combined without travelling huge distances.

Inis Meáin is the quietest of the three for most visitors. It suits people who want walking, heritage, Irish-language culture and a less hurried island experience rather than a long checklist of commercial attractions.

Getting to the islands from Galway
Passenger ferries from Rossaveel are the usual starting point for visitors travelling from Galway. If you drive, read our Rossaveel parking guide before setting out. Each island also has its own detailed travel guide linked below.
Day trip or overnight?
A day trip is enough to understand the character of one island, but staying overnight changes the experience. The main daytime crowds leave, pubs and local evenings become more relaxed, and you can walk early the next morning before the next ferries arrive.
Do not try to visit all three in one day
The islands are close on a map, but a good visit needs time on the ground. Choose one island for the day and explore it properly. If you want to see more than one, plan separate days or an overnight itinerary.
