Inis Mór Day Trip from Galway: Ferry, Dún Aonghasa & Planning

An Inis Mór day trip from Galway is easiest when you decide on one or two priorities before boarding the ferry. Inis Mór is the largest of the Aran Islands, so a day visit works best when you allow time for the journey from Galway to Rossaveel, the crossing, getting around the island and the return sailing.

Getting from Galway to Inis Mór

Passenger ferries to Inis Mór depart from Rossaveel, west of Galway City. Include the mainland transfer to the port in your planning and confirm the current shuttle, check-in and sailing arrangements before travelling.

Check the outward and return sailing before you travel and keep enough time between the expected return to Galway and any onward connection. Weather can affect island transport, so avoid planning the day too tightly.

Dún Aonghasa: the main heritage stop

Dún Aonghasa is the island’s best-known archaeological site and a strong choice as the main focus of a first visit. The prehistoric stone fort stands dramatically above the Atlantic cliffs and deserves enough time for the walk, the site itself and the surrounding views.

The visitor centre is at Cill Mhuirbhigh, around 7 km west of Cill Rónáin. From the visitor centre there is roughly a 1 km uphill walk to the fort over uneven ground. Strong walking shoes are recommended, and there is no barrier at the cliff edge, so take particular care in windy or wet conditions.

The visitor centre operates year-round, but opening hours can change. Check current opening arrangements before travelling, especially outside the main summer season.

How to get around Inis Mór

From Cill Rónáin, visitors commonly explore by bicycle, minibus, horse and carriage or on foot. Choose a transport option that matches the weather and the amount of ground you want to cover. A bicycle gives flexibility, but the island is larger than it first appears on a map, so leave enough time to return it before the ferry.

If Dún Aonghasa is your main stop, avoid adding too many distant sights unless the timings genuinely work. A slower route with a meal in Cill Rónáin often makes a better day than trying to cross the whole island and rush back to the harbour.

Practical tips

Bring a waterproof layer, water and footwear suitable for uneven surfaces. Check opening arrangements for any paid attraction you want to visit and do not assume seasonal services will operate every day.

When you arrive, confirm the return departure time and harbour location. Give yourself a generous margin before boarding, particularly if you are returning from the western side of the island.
