Aughnanure Castle: Medieval Connemara Stop Near Oughterard

Aughnanure Castle near Oughterard is one of the best preserved late-medieval tower houses in Connemara and an easy heritage stop on the road west from Galway.

Why Aughnanure Castle matters

The castle was a stronghold of the O’Flaherty lords of Iarchonnacht, one of the most powerful Gaelic families in west Connacht. The main tower house dates from the late fifteenth century, with later defensive enclosures and a banqueting hall showing how the site developed.

A castle built around water

Aughnanure stands beside the Drimneen River, close to Lough Corrib. Its position was not accidental: access to rivers and lakes was important to O’Flaherty power and movement through the region.

What can you see?

The visit includes the tower house, walled enclosures, surviving structures and interpretation of the site’s history. There is also a short river walk. Some surfaces and stairs are uneven, so this is not a completely level modern attraction.

2026 opening season

For 2026, the official season runs from 27 February to 18 November, with longer daily hours through most of the year and an earlier close from late October. Check the exact opening time before a dedicated trip because seasonal arrangements can change.

Location near Oughterard

The castle is about 3.5km from Oughterard, just off the N59. That makes it one of the easiest Connemara stops to add near the beginning or end of a day trip from Galway.

What to combine it with

Aughnanure works particularly well with Oughterard and a wider Connemara drive. If you continue west, Clifden can become the main destination; if you only have half a day, the castle and Oughterard are enough without pushing deeper into the region.

Family visit

The site can work well for school-age children who enjoy castles and defensive features, but younger children need supervision around steps, walls, water and uneven ground. Overnight camping in the castle car park is not permitted.
