Dog’s Bay and Gurteen Bay in Connemara sit back-to-back on a narrow peninsula near Roundstone. Their bright shell sand and clear water create one of the most distinctive beach landscapes in County Galway.
Why the sand looks different
The pale sand is formed largely from tiny fragments of seashells rather than the rock material found on many Irish beaches. The surrounding grassland is machair, a rare coastal habitat associated with the west of Ireland and Scotland.
Dog’s Bay
Dog’s Bay curves into a broad horseshoe and stretches for more than a kilometre. The shape creates a sheltered-looking bay, but it is still an Atlantic beach: check the conditions on the day and supervise children around the water.
Gurteen Bay
Gurteen lies on the opposite side of the same peninsula and is slightly closer to Roundstone. The two beaches are only a short walk apart, so there is rarely a reason to choose one without at least looking at the other.
Swimming and water activities
The clear water attracts swimmers, windsurfers and kayakers in good conditions. Do not assume calm-looking water means conditions are suitable for everyone. Weather, wind and water temperature can change quickly, and there is no substitute for judging the beach in front of you.
Protect the dunes and machair
This is an environmentally sensitive area. Stay on established access routes, avoid driving or parking on fragile grassland and take all rubbish away. The landscape is part of what makes the beaches special, not simply empty space around a car park.
Parking
Parking pressure can be significant on sunny days. If designated spaces are full, do not block the road or local access. Arriving earlier, visiting outside peak summer weekends or spending time in Roundstone first can make the trip much easier.
What to combine with the beaches
Roundstone is the obvious partner for lunch or a harbour walk. A longer day can continue towards Clifden, but give yourself enough time to enjoy the beaches rather than treating them as a five-minute photograph.
