Derrigimlagh: Marconi, Alcock & Brown and the Connemara Bog Walk

Derrigimlagh Connemara is a quiet bog landscape south of Clifden with an extraordinary place in communications and aviation history. Two major transatlantic stories happened within the same stretch of wet ground.

Marconi’s transatlantic wireless station

Guglielmo Marconi built a major wireless station at Derrigimlagh in the early twentieth century. At its height, the site employed hundreds of people and transmitted messages across the Atlantic, making this isolated bog part of a global communications network.

Alcock and Brown

In June 1919, John Alcock and Arthur Whitten Brown completed the first non-stop transatlantic flight, travelling from Newfoundland to Connemara. Their aircraft landed in Derrigimlagh Bog, not far from the Marconi site. Both men survived the landing.

The 5km loop walk

Today, a roughly 5km loop uses paths and boardwalk sections to connect the historic landscape. Interpretation along the route explains the wireless station and the flight. The experience is less about a single monument and more about understanding what happened across the bog.

Weather and footwear

This is exposed Connemara terrain. Bring waterproof clothing and suitable shoes even when the route itself is relatively straightforward. Wind can make a cool day feel much colder, and low cloud changes the atmosphere quickly.

Free Connemara stop

Derrigimlagh is free to visit and works well with Clifden. It is especially worthwhile for anyone interested in engineering, aviation or modern Irish history.

Do not rush the story

The remains are subtle compared with a castle or abbey. Reading the interpretation is what turns the bog into a meaningful historical site, so allow enough time to walk rather than expecting one dramatic structure.

What to combine it with

Clifden, Sky Road and Derrigimlagh can form a focused western Connemara day. Adding Roundstone is possible with a long summer day, but the history walk is better when it is not squeezed between several distant stops.
