Hidden Gems on Inis Oírr: Quiet Walks, Lighthouse & Island Corners

The best hidden gems on Inis Oírr are not necessarily secret places. They are the parts of the island that visitors miss when they rush between the pier, Plassy wreck and return ferry. Slow the day down and the quieter roads, shoreline and cultural spaces become just as memorable as the headline landmarks.

The road to the lighthouse

The southern road towards Inis Oírr Lighthouse is one of the best ways to leave the busiest part of the island behind. The landscape opens out, traffic thins and the walk feels much more remote than the short distance from the village suggests.

Rocky shoreline beside the pier

Many visitors walk straight from the ferry into the village. Before doing that, look along the rocky shoreline beside the harbour. It gives an immediate sense of how the island sits in Galway Bay and can be especially atmospheric in changing weather.

Áras Éanna

Visitors focused on outdoor sightseeing sometimes skip Áras Éanna. That is a mistake if you are interested in contemporary island culture. Exhibitions, performances and artist activity add a very different layer to a day dominated by stone walls and historic sites.

Walk without a checklist

Some of the best parts of Inis Oírr are the ordinary roads between named sights: limestone fields, small lanes, walls and sudden views towards Clare or Galway Bay. Choose a direction, keep the ferry time in mind and leave room to stop.

For the main sights, use our things to do on Inis Oírr guide. If you are staying overnight, our where to stay on Inis Oírr guide will help you turn these quieter places into an evening or early-morning walk.
