A drive into the Burren has an excellent excuse for a chocolate break. At Hazel Mountain Chocolate near Bellharbour, the shop and factory sit together, giving you a chance to see some of the work behind the bars before choosing what to take home.
It is a satisfying stop for anyone interested in food made on a small scale—and a tempting one if your only plan is a hot chocolate and something from the bakery.
From cacao beans to chocolate
Hazel Mountain works from bean to bar at its Burren factory. Its process includes roasting, cracking and winnowing cacao beans, then grinding the nibs before ageing the chocolate.
The open-plan layout allows visitors to look into the production area from the shop. Think of this as a window onto a working food business: what you see depends on what the team is making, rather than a demonstration staged every few minutes.
A casual shop and factory viewing visit does not require a booking, according to the company’s visitor information. Organised chocolate tours are a separate option and should be checked and booked for your intended date.
Choose something to taste now—and later
The range includes milk, dark and vegan chocolate creations, with other treats available alongside the bars. If you are shopping for someone else, start with their tastes rather than the most unusual flavour on the shelf.
Our suggestion is to choose a small mix rather than several versions of the same thing. That turns a purchase into an excuse to compare flavours at home, long after the drive through the Burren is over.
The café is a separate part of the plan
The Burren café offers hot chocolate, coffee, pastries and other freshly prepared food, with indoor and outdoor seating. Its opening days can differ from those of the shop and factory, so check both if lunch or coffee is the main reason for your visit.
The business lists card payments only. Ask about ingredients and dietary needs before choosing; a vegan or gluten-free option does not by itself tell you about every possible allergen.
Burren factory or Galway city shop?
The factory and café are at Oughtmama, Bellharbour, County Clare, H91 VCF1. Hazel Mountain also has a Galway city shop at 9 Middle Street, a useful alternative if your trip stays in the city.
These are different visits. Choose the Burren location for the factory setting and countryside outing, or the Middle Street shop for a city-centre chocolate stop. Check the latest hours for the address you intend to use.
For a day out from Galway, let this be one enjoyable stop along a manageable route. There is no prize for reaching the next viewpoint before you have finished your hot chocolate.
