Portumna Castle and Gardens: A Galway Day Out Beside Lough Derg

Galway’s day trips do not all lead towards the Atlantic. Head east to Portumna Castle and Gardens, beside Lough Derg, and the day takes on a different shape: grand architecture, garden paths and the possibility of a walk by the lake.

The castle’s long approach is part of the pleasure. Give yourself time to see how the gateways and formal gardens frame the building before going inside.

A castle between two worlds

Built for the fourth earl of Clanricarde in the early seventeenth century, Portumna combines medieval defensive features with Renaissance design. It was a de Burgo family power base, although a fire in 1826 left it a roofless shell.

Restoration began under the state in the 1960s and remains part of its story. The publicly accessible ground-floor exhibition introduces the family, building and restoration work. This is not a fully furnished mansion tour through every level, so arrive expecting architecture and interpretation rather than room after room of period interiors.

Do not rush the gardens

The walled kitchen garden deserves a proper look. Its geometrical layout still holds vegetables, herbs, flowers, fruit trees and shrubs, making it easier to imagine the practical work behind a grand household.

The formal gardens offer another perspective on the castle. Seasonal planting changes the mood, and the roses are a particular feature in early summer. In other months, the layout and views towards the building remain reasons to wander.

Our suggestion is to walk the approach, visit the exhibition and leave the kitchen garden until last. It is a pleasant place to slow down once the main history is in place.

Make Portumna the destination

Portumna Forest Park and the lakeside are nearby, giving walkers an easy way to extend the outing. Choose one route that suits your time and energy, rather than treating the castle as a brief stop before another long drive.

For families, ask what trails, quizzes or other activities are available during your visit. The site has offered children’s ways into the history, but individual features and events should be confirmed on the day.

Opening, tickets and access

The castle is a seasonal attraction. The published 2026 season runs from 5 March to 11 November, with shorter hours towards its end. Check current admission and last-entry times before travelling, especially in late autumn.

Access is limited in parts of the historic building. Contact the site about your requirements rather than assuming that garden access also means step-free entry to the castle exhibition.

Address: Portumna Castle and Gardens, Portumna, County Galway, H53 YK27. Allow a comfortable part of the day for the castle, grounds and a break in town.
