A Galway evening can take a different turn just off Quay Street. On Druid Lane, the Mick Lally Theatre offers a reason to pause the pub-hopping and give a performance your full attention.
This is Druid’s home in the city, with a history that reaches back to the company’s move into a former tea storehouse in 1979. The building was redesigned by DePaor architects in 2009; today it brings a contemporary theatre into one of Galway’s oldest neighbourhoods.
Choose the performance first
The venue welcomes visiting and local organisations as well as being central to Druid’s story. It also appears in festival programmes, so the experience depends on what is playing when you visit.
Look at the programme for The Mick Lally Theatre specifically. Druid is a touring company, and a production on its wider website may be playing in another city. Confirm the venue, date, start time and running time before booking an evening around it.
That small bit of planning pays off. Rather than squeezing a show into whatever time is left after dinner, make it the anchor for the evening and arrange everything else around it.
Before the lights go down
The theatre sits between Quay Street and Flood Street, close to the Latin Quarter. Our suggestion is to arrive in the neighbourhood early enough for a wander and an unhurried meal. Leave yourself a comfortable gap before curtain time; dinner is much more enjoyable when you are not repeatedly checking your phone.
The venue’s bar opens for pre-show, interval and post-show drinks. If you would rather keep the evening in one place, that gives you an easy way to settle in before the performance and talk it over afterwards.
Access and arrival
The ground-floor auditorium, foyer and bar are wheelchair accessible. Events in the first-floor rehearsal room are reached by stairs, so check which space your ticket is for and contact the venue about any specific requirements.
The theatre operates as a ticketless venue. Have your booking details ready and follow the instructions supplied for your particular event. Prices, availability and admission arrangements depend on the performance.
