Connemara without a car from Galway is completely possible, but the best trip is built around places served directly by bus or coach. Clifden, Oughterard, Letterfrack and South Connemara are much easier without a car than remote beaches or scattered viewpoints.

Citylink Route 923
Irish Citylink Route 923 links Galway with Oughterard, Maam Cross, Recess and Clifden, with selected services continuing towards Letterfrack and Cleggan. For visitors, this is one of the most useful public-transport routes into western Connemara.
Bus Éireann Route 419
Bus Éireann Route 419 also connects Galway and Clifden through Oughterard. The timetable pattern differs from Citylink, so the two services can sometimes give you more flexibility when planning an outward and return journey.
South Connemara on Route 424
Bus Éireann Route 424 serves the Galway–Carraroe–Lettermullen corridor through South Connemara. This is the useful route for An Cheathrú Rua, the Gaeltacht coast and connections towards Trá an Dóilín rather than Clifden or Letterfrack.
Galway has two different coach stations
Do not assume every Connemara service leaves from the same building. Citylink uses Galway Coach Station on Fairgreen Road, while Bus Éireann services use Galway Bus Station at Ceannt Station beside Eyre Square. They are close, but they are not the same stop.
Best easy day trip without a car: Clifden
Clifden is the simplest first choice. You can walk the town, eat, shop and explore nearby sights without needing another connection. The Sky Road is harder without your own transport, so do not build the day around it unless you have arranged a local taxi, bike or tour.
Best walking day: Letterfrack
If your service continues to Letterfrack, Connemara National Park is within easy reach. The marked trails begin near the village, making this one of the best outdoor trips that does not require a car after arrival.
Oughterard as a shorter trip
Oughterard is much closer to Galway and works well when you want a shorter day. The town itself is easy on foot, though Aughnanure Castle is outside the centre and requires extra planning.
Do not plan around the last possible bus
Rural timetables can change, and delays or service disruptions happen. Check both outward and return services on the day and leave a backup option rather than relying on the final connection after a long hike.
Tours can solve the geography problem
Organised day tours are a practical alternative when you want to see Kylemore Abbey and several Connemara viewpoints without hiring a car. Compare what is included rather than assuming every tour follows the same route.
