Corrib Princess Galway: A River Cruise from Woodquay to Lough Corrib

There is a different Galway just upstream from the busy streets. On a Corrib Princess Galway cruise, the shopfronts give way to riverside trees, old ruins and the open water of Lough Corrib. It is a chance to sit down, watch the banks slip past and see how closely the city is connected to the countryside around it.

The departure point is Woodquay, within the city rather than out on the coast. That makes the trip an appealing addition to a Galway stay when you want time on the water without setting aside a whole day for an island excursion.

Where does the Corrib Princess go?

The standard sightseeing journey follows the River Corrib towards the lower part of Lough Corrib and returns to Galway. The operator describes a trip of approximately 90 minutes. This is a river-and-lake cruise, rather than a crossing of Galway Bay or a ferry to the Aran Islands.

The scenery changes gradually as you travel upstream. Among the operator’s highlighted sights are the university riverside, Terryland Castle and the ivy-covered ruins of Menlo Castle. The guided commentary gives some context to places that might otherwise be little more than shapes on the bank.

Do not book this expecting to visit Ashford Castle. It is farther away on the upper lake and is not part of the standard Galway sightseeing sailing.

What is the experience like on board?

The boat has an outdoor upper deck and an enclosed lounge, so you can choose between fresh air and shelter. An extra layer is useful even when the city feels warm. Once you are sitting still on the water, the breeze can feel quite different from the weather between the buildings.

This suits visitors who enjoy scenery at a slower pace. Rather than looking for a succession of major attractions, give yourself permission to watch the river. If you have spent the morning walking around town, sitting down for part of the afternoon can make the rest of the day more enjoyable.

Finding the departure point

Boarding is at Steamers Quay, Waterside, Woodquay, close to the Commercial Boat Club. Do not follow directions to Galway’s harbour or docks on the seaward side of town. Save your booking confirmation and allow time to find the actual boat before the stated departure.

Walking is usually the simplest option when staying centrally. If driving, choose a proper public parking space and leave enough time to walk from it; the boarding area should not be treated as a car park. Our Galway city-centre parking guide can help with the wider plan.

Accessibility and travelling with children

Speak to the operator before booking if boarding steps or ramps could be difficult. The published access information describes restrictions for some wheelchairs, lower-deck access and toilets that are not wheelchair accessible. Confirm arrangements for your particular equipment and assistance needs rather than relying on the word “accessible” alone.

Children need adult supervision throughout. For families, think about how everyone will feel during a seated outing of this length, and ask about pushchairs or any other equipment in advance.

When can you take the cruise?

The service is seasonal, and the available sightseeing dates should be checked for your visit. Private hires and standard public departures are different products, with different arrangements. Do not assume that a photograph of an evening event represents what is included in a daytime ticket.

Check the date, boarding time, inclusions and cancellation terms before paying. If the lake section is particularly important to you, ask how conditions can affect the route. Leave a little space between the advertised return and your next fixed booking.

A relaxed way to build the rest of your day

You could explore the streets around Shop Street in the morning, have lunch, then walk up towards Woodquay for the cruise. Afterwards, keep the evening simple: dinner and a stroll are enough. There is no need to add another long journey just because you have some daylight left.
